Description

Grandma’s Thanksgiving Turkey Stuffing is a classic holiday side dish featuring homemade dried bread cubes soaked in a savory mixture of sautéed onions, celery, butter, chicken stock, and aromatic poultry seasoning. Baked to a golden brown, this comforting stuffing pairs perfectly with turkey and other festive dishes for a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread Cubes

  • 1315 cups dry bread cubes (about 2 1-pound loaves; preferably heavier bread such as French bread)

Vegetables and Butter

  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion

Seasonings and Other Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken stock (low sodium chicken broth recommended)
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC) and spray a 2-quart casserole dish or a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray to prepare for baking the stuffing.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter and sauté the diced onion and chopped celery for 10-12 minutes, until both are tender and fragrant.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Place the dry bread cubes into a large mixing bowl. Pour the butter, onion, and celery mixture over the bread cubes, then add salt, black pepper, poultry seasoning, chicken stock, and eggs. Mix everything together thoroughly to ensure the bread absorbs all flavors.
  4. Bake Stuffing: Spread the prepared stuffing evenly into the greased baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the stuffing is cooked through.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Optionally garnish with fresh parsley or herbs like rosemary before serving warm as a perfect complement to your Thanksgiving turkey.

Notes

  • To make homemade dried bread cubes, cut bread into 1-inch cubes two days before cooking and allow them to air dry in a large bowl for about 48 hours, stirring occasionally to dry evenly.
  • The recipe calls for 13-15 cups of tightly packed homemade dried bread cubes; press cubes into the measuring cup to avoid air gaps and ensure the correct amount.
  • If using store-bought crispy bread cubes or preferring a drier stuffing, increase the quantity of bread cubes accordingly.
  • Store leftover stuffing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
