Description

This Simple Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a creamy mushroom gravy. The steaks are lightly floured and pan-seared before being baked in a savory sauce, resulting in tender, flavorful meat perfect to serve over egg noodles, rice, or potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale

Steaks

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups cracker crumbs (buttery crackers or saltine crackers)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup flour, for dusting steaks (can use gluten-free flour)

Gravy

  • 20 ounces (2 cans) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 1/2 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cracker crumbs, 1 cup of milk, dried Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper if using, and season well with salt and black pepper. Mix gently with clean hands until just combined, taking care not to overmix to keep the steaks tender.
  2. Form the Hamburger Steaks: Shape the meat mixture into evenly sized hamburger steaks, ensuring consistent thickness for even cooking.
  3. Pan-Sear the Steaks: Heat a drizzle of cooking oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Lightly dust both sides of each steak with flour to help create a slight crust. Place the steaks in the hot skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides; the steaks will not be fully cooked at this stage.
  4. Arrange Steaks in Baking Dish: Transfer the seared hamburger steaks to a 13×9-inch baking pan, spacing them evenly.
  5. Prepare the Gravy: In a bowl, stir together the two cans of cream of mushroom soup and 1 1/2 cups milk until smooth and combined.
  6. Assemble and Bake: Pour the mushroom soup mixture over the hamburger steaks in the baking pan, covering them evenly. Cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil to retain moisture.
  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for approximately 30 minutes. During the last 5 minutes, remove the cover to allow the gravy to thicken slightly and brown on top.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and serve the hamburger steak bake hot over egg noodles, rice, or potatoes for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meat to keep the steaks tender and juicy.
  • Flouring the steaks before pan-searing helps develop a light crust and thickens the gravy during baking.
  • Covering the baking dish during most of the baking time keeps the moisture locked in for tender steaks.
  • Uncovering in the last 5 minutes helps brown the gravy for added flavor and appearance.
  • Serve over your choice of egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes to complete the meal.
  • You can use gluten-free flour and gluten-free crackers to make this dish gluten-free.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper to your desired spice level or omit for a milder dish.
