Description

A classic, smooth turkey gravy made from the flavorful drippings and reserved fat of a roasted turkey. This gravy is thickened with all-purpose flour and enriched with turkey or chicken broth, seasoned simply with salt and black pepper. Perfectly complements roast turkey and traditional Thanksgiving side dishes.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Gravy Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup turkey drippings and reserved fat from the roasted turkey
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups turkey or chicken broth, homemade or store-bought
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Separate Drippings and Fat: After roasting the turkey, remove it from the roasting pan. Pour the turkey drippings and reserved fat through a fine-mesh strainer into a separate container to separate the fat from the drippings.
  2. Make the Roux: In a saucepan, heat the reserved turkey fat over medium-low heat. Add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously to combine the fat and flour. Cook the roux for 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let it brown too much to avoid a burnt flavor.
  3. Add Broth and Drippings: Gradually whisk in the turkey drippings and the turkey or chicken broth into the roux. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and begins to simmer, approximately 5-10 minutes. For a thinner consistency, add additional broth as needed.
  4. Season the Gravy: Season the gravy with salt and black pepper to taste. Keep in mind that seasoning amounts depend on the saltiness of your drippings and broth, so adjust accordingly by tasting.
  5. Serve: Once the gravy reaches your desired thickness and flavor, remove it from heat. Pour into a gravy boat or serving dish and serve warm alongside roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and your favorite Thanksgiving side dishes.
